SSM - STORServer Manager The STORServer Appliance Operations Manager And, The Stand-Alone Operations Manager for Tivoli Storage Manager.

STORServer Manager is either bundled into the STORServer Backup Appliance as the Operations Manager, or can layer on top of Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM), to increase its functionality and ease-of-use, resulting in a highly disaster-tolerant TSM implementation. STORServer Manager allows users to see when tasks are completed, taking the guesswork out of task scheduling. It uses a Windows GUI for configuring and scheduling tasks. Full software control has been given to the user, to both automate all appliance or TSM functions, or to run tasks on demand.

STORServer Manager® is the operations interface add-on software to Tivoli's® Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM). The current version of STORServer Manager (4.2) is a markedly enhanced version of the popular STORServer Manager 1.2 and is designed to work with TSM version 4.1 and above.

STORServer Manager Serializes and Synchronizes Critical TSM Functions
TSM performance decreases when multiple end-of-day tasks run simultaneously. Without STORServer Manager, TSM administrators write scheduling scripts to ensure that only one task runs at a time. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to determine how much time tasks take; their execution time varies widely from day to day depending on the amount of data arriving at the server. To ensure adequate time, the administrator usually creates large time windows that inevitably reduce the time available for other time-critical TSM functions. STORServer Manager eliminates this problem by serializing and synchronizing these key TSM functions:

• Backing up data to removable media for off-site storage.
• Migrating data from disk to tape as on-site data copies.
• Backing up TSM's powerful engine, the TSM database.
• Other TSM operations such as recovery script preparation, expiration and storage pool reclamation.

STORServer Manager Enhances TSM Status Reporting
Management of TSM should include verifying that your daily operations have completed successfully, identifying what operations are currently in progress, and viewing what resources are being used by TSM. STORServer Manager provides a variety of easy-to-use status displays to make it simple to see what's going on and to find and fix errors that might occur. These status displays include:

STORServer Manager Simplifies Tape and Library Management
STORServer Manager eases the task of tape management. With a single click, a tape volume containing primary or copy storage pool data or database backup data can be checked in or out of a library, as needed. With its intuitive GUI, users can easily check in scratch tapes or label blank tapes.

Enhancements in Version 4.2
We've added the most requested features to STORServer Manager 4.2.

• The new STORServer Manager has been enhanced for distributed environments. By separating the viewer from the server software, the viewer can now reside on any Windows 98/2000/NT/2003 computer on the network.
• The server software is now multithreaded so different operations can be run simultaneously.
