Storage Pools

The STORServer is built upon Storage Pool or virtual media technology, rather than the typical tape-based technology for backup solutions. Whether backing up to disk, tape or optical, the STORServer is designed to capture backup and archive data to the optimum media for restore and retrieval. Storage Pools can be set up for any group of data, group of user's data, or group of archived data. The number and function of pools is practically unlimited.

Storage Pools allow data to be managed in a relational database for retrieval, rather than force complicated tape management schemes, and multiple copies of the same file across several tape locations.

Storage Pools also allow migration paths of data to follow any stream that fits the business requirements. The default for most data is to backup first to a disk storage pool, then migrate to a tape pool and a tape copy pool at the same time. The tape copy pool becomes the off-site DR copy.

The first disk storage pool is typically designed as a “cache” pool, which flushes out older data as new data is backed up. The size of the cache pool is flexible, and dynamic. Most installations size for at least two days of changed data, but can expand to as many as live in the “online” pool.

The online pool is configured as either tape or disk, depending upon the price and performance requirements of the customer. Several model configurations are provided to make this decision easier to make.

The offline, or copy, pools typically reside in an off site location. Tape is still the preferred media for off-site, because of the size, compression, and more reliable check-in and check-out benefits of tape. In smaller installs, however, DVD optical media is fast becoming interesting as a low-cost off-site copy media.
